What Are The Sticks Up To These Days?

Picture
Most of the members of The Sticks grew up in the 80's (yowza) participating in, working at, or running YPCCA - The Young People's Center For Creative Arts in East Hampton, CT.  These days, the organization is stronger than ever and has stayed in the Mansfield family who started it more than 30 years ago.

Rachel Mansfield, Sticks member, heads it up and along with fellow Sticks Chris Briggs, Jen Friday, Marilyn Friday-Myers, Kim Cordeiro and Kendra Dickinson, puts on a great summer program culminating in the performance of a big, broadway musical for the big kids and a great kids musical for the little folks in YPCCA Jr.

Rachel's dad Mike (also Sticks member Chris Mansfield's dad) started the program with Rachel's mom Dina.  In the years following their passing, a scholarship has been given to a local graduating high school student who intends to pursue the arts or education.  Each year, YPCCA puts on another broadway show to raise money for that scholarship.

This year, that show is Oliver and it features a big cast and crew... many of them new to the program, but several from The Sticks.  We're all hard at work rehearsing and building what should be a great show in the first week of May.  And this year we're donating the proceeds to the UConn Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund.   A great cause and one that we all know Mike and Dina would have been proud to support.

This time of year tends to put The Sticks in cold storage for a bit while we work on the show!  But we're still here, working, laughing, rehearsing.  If you're interested in learning more about YPCCA or our upcoming performances of Oliver, send us an email.  We love those.

In the meantime, here's a video of Sticks Kim and Thom rehearsing their song for the first time.

Improv Comedy In The Sticks Of Connecticut

Picture
Twelve friends from the little town of East Hampton, Connecticut.  Twelve (mostly) old, old, absurdly old friends who like to sing, dance and imbibe.

The Sticks are complicated.  Some of them are married to one another.  Some of them date each other.  Some of them are related.  Some of them share a hatred of snakes.

All of them like to make each other laugh.

The Sticks came together out of a common desire to learn something new and to find a reason to play.  They have children (14!), jobs, houses, chickens, minivans, pets, pools, gardens, secrets, phobias, fetishes, bosses, employees, opinions, lawns, impure thoughts, dreams, desires, commutes, communes, combines, compost, combos (yum), hybrids, hymens (ha!), hiccups, history, boo boo tum tums, and bunions.

The sticks have learned longform improv like The Harold.  Send us a message if you'd like us to come perform.  We don't usually charge, but we often like to ask for donations for local charities.  We're not goody goodies or anything, but we do like to be kind to our fellow man/woman.
